Manipulation, drilling or an autodialer — what each one costs you
Three ways into a safe with no combination. They differ less in whether they work and more in what they leave behind.

Manipulation
Manipulation reads the lock rather than forcing it. The technician feels for the minute variations as the drive cam contacts each wheel's gate and uses them to narrow the combination down. When it works it is the cleanest outcome available: nothing is touched, nothing is replaced, and there is no evidence the safe was ever opened by anyone but its owner.
The honest limitation is availability. It is a craft that takes years to acquire, plenty of otherwise excellent locksmiths never get there, and it does not succeed on every lock — modern designs include features specifically intended to defeat it.
Drilling
Drilling gets the door open on a known timetable, which is why it remains the default in an emergency. Everything that makes it expensive happens after the door is open.
- The lock is destroyed and must be replaced.
- The hole in the door or plate needs a proper repair if the safe is to stay in service.
- Many safes carry a relocker designed to fire if the door is attacked — hitting one converts a one-hour job into a much longer and more expensive one.
- Any certification the safe held is gone.
None of that argues against drilling when it is the right call. It argues against reaching for it first.

Autodialer
An autodialer automates what manipulation does by hand: it drives the dial through the combination range and detects the lever dropping. The trade it makes is explicit — it spends machine time instead of craft skill, and it leaves the safe exactly as it found it.
On a three-wheel Group 2 lock the coarse sweep across the whole range takes about 50 minutes and opens most safes. The realistic average across jobs is around two and a half hours. Finer settings take longer; the full figures are in how long an autodialer takes.
The comparison people usually get wrong is time. An autodialer's hours are not hours you stand there — the machine runs unattended while you are on another job. Drilling's hours are hours of your labour, and the repair afterwards is hours of somebody's.

- Contents needed within the hour, safe expendable — drill.
- Safe must stay in service, certification matters, no rush — autodialer.
- A manipulation specialist is available and the lock suits it — take it.
- You open safes regularly for a living — an autodialer pays for itself in locks you no longer have to replace.
