What a safe autodialer is, and how it actually works

Not the film version. A real autodialer is a patient machine that turns a dial for hours and watches for one specific mechanical event.

The idea in one paragraph

A safe autodialer clamps onto the dial of a mechanical combination lock and turns it for you. It works through the combination range in a defined order and watches the lock continuously. When the wheels line up and the lock's lever drops into the gates, the machine detects it, stops, and shows the winning numbers. No feel, no guesswork, no drilling.

The word "autodialer" also refers to telephone dialling software, which has nothing to do with any of this. In the safe trade it means the machine described here.

How it drives the dial

The machine mounts coaxially with the dial — its shaft has to line up with the dial spindle, not sit at an angle — and grips it through a chuck. On the AutoDialer V4 a magnetic base holds the body to the safe door. Getting this alignment right is most of the setup: turn it by hand first, and it should feel tight, smooth, no slip and no wobble.

From there a closed-loop industrial stepper motor turns the dial. Closed-loop matters on a job that runs for hours: the motor reports its real position back continuously, so a stiff dial or a change in mechanical load cannot cause it to quietly lose steps and corrupt the whole sweep.

How it knows it has opened

As the wheels pass through their range, the lock's lever rides on the drive cam. When all the gates align, the lever drops. That drop is the event the machine is looking for — it senses the moment it happens, halts the scan and displays the combination on screen.

What the step setting means

A dial has more positions than a lock can actually distinguish. Every Group 2 lock has mechanical tolerance, so trying every single number is wasted effort. The step setting is how far the machine moves between attempts.

The sequence in practice is to start coarse and work finer. The AutoDialer V4 does not change step by itself — when a sweep finishes without opening, you press STEP down a level and run it again. That is deliberate: it keeps the operator in control of how long the machine commits to a given job.

Direction, wheels and speed

Three settings cover the variation between locks: WHEEL for three- or four-wheel locks, DIR for a left- or right-turning dial (right-hand dials are common on Japanese safes), and speed — slow for an old safe with a loose, worn action, fast for a tight one. Turn the dial by hand first; light suggests slow, heavy suggests fast, and when in doubt the normal setting is the right answer.

Running unattended

This is the part that makes the hours acceptable. The machine runs on 24V DC at under 30W, typically sits at 40–45°C and stays below 55°C even on twelve-hour runs, and is built for continuous duty. You start it and leave. If mains power fails mid-scan it saves its position every minute, so you set the dial to the saved number and continue rather than starting again.

There is no laptop, no phone, no app and no Wi-Fi — everything happens on the machine's own touchscreen. There is also no lithium battery, which is what allows it to ship by air worldwide without special handling.

What it will not open

Being straight about this saves everyone time. An autodialer works on mechanical dial locks. It does not open electronic or keypad locks, time locks, dual-key mechanisms, or locks with relockers and heavy anti-manipulation features. If a lock's internal mechanism is already broken, no dialling machine will fix that.
